2026-2027
Phase 2:
Designing the Future of Catechetical Leadership
Reimagining Catechetical Leadership Formation
Drawing on the insights gathered through the Faith Formation Survey, Learning Communities, and ongoing discernment, Phase 2 will focus on reimagining catechetical leadership formation for the Church of today—and tomorrow. Working collaboratively with the Archdiocese of Chicago, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake will review existing programs, develop new approaches to formation, and pilot innovative learning experiences that prepare clergy and lay leaders to serve together in a rapidly changing world.
Catechetical Leadership Advisory Board
A newly established Catechetical Leadership Advisory Board, composed of Learning Community participants and ministry leaders from across the Archdiocese, will continue the synodal conversations begun in Phase 1. Their lived experience, prayerful discernment, and pastoral expertise will help shape curricula that are responsive to the needs of today’s parishes while remaining faithful to the Church’s mission.
Develop and Test New Offerings
Throughout this phase, USML’s School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization will collaborate closely with the Archdiocese’s Offices of Lifelong Formation and Catholic Schools to strengthen and better align catechetical leadership programs across the Archdiocese. New academic offerings, certificate programs, and ongoing formation opportunities will be developed and tested using in-person, online, and hybrid formats to make high-quality formation more accessible to those called to serve.
