Papal Medallions
In the late 16th century, tourism to Rome and the Vatican began to flourish, particularly among young noblemen who were expected to travel across Europe as part of their education. Collecting small souvenirs served as tangible proof of their journeys. Recognizing this trend, the Vatican saw an opportunity: medals and coins could serve not only as mementos of a pilgrimage but also as instruments for promoting the Church’s message and values.
In response, the Vatican established a formal program adopted by successive popes. Medals were issued to commemorate significant events—such as papal elections or Jubilee years—as well as to illustrate key biblical themes, including the baptism of Christ.
Today, these medallions continue to be available to the faithful. They serve as objects of devotion, reflections of prayer and faith, and enduring reminders of the Church’s spiritual and historical legacy.
