Italian Confessional from the 16th Century

This confessional was designed to be moved from place to place so that priests could hear the confessions of parishioners across the countryside.  The priest sat in the center while two penitents knelt on either side of the confessional and spoke through the grills, as is still done today. As the confessional was not enclosed, passersby could easily see who was receiving their penance that day.
