New Director of Deacon Formation at USML

Deacon Daniel Moore is named the new Archdiocesan Director of Deacon Formation at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake (USML). As the Director of Deacon Formation, he’ll oversee the deacon program in English and Spanish for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Moore was born and raised in Aurora, Illinois. He’s lived in Buffalo Grove for 25 years and was ordained a deacon on May 25, 2012. He currently serves at Saint Thomas Becket and Saint Alphonsus Liguori Parish in Mt. Prospect and Prospect Heights, Illinois. Previously, he was a deacon at St. Mary of Vernon, Indian Creek, Illinois.

Moore’s academic and formation journey is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the Church. He graduated from Marmion Academy’s college preparatory school in 1988 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1992 and a Master’s in Business Administration from DePaul University in 1996.

In the diaconate community, Moore is part of the Deacon Council in Vicariate I as Deacon Coordinator of Deanery F. He’s been active throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago in the Deacon Formation Program for years. He’s also adjunct faculty for Presiding at the Rites, mentors deacons, and is on the deacon Admission and Scrutinies Board.

Moore’s family significantly impacted his decision in his transition to becoming a deacon. He and his wife, Noelle, have been married for 28 years and are both deeply rooted in the Catholic faith. Their son, Charlie is currently pursuing legal studies. “[My family] knows me and can help me think and see from outside myself,” he said. “We enjoy walking in local parks and preserves and cheering on our beloved [Chicago] Cubs! They have always encouraged me to follow my heart and go where God is leading. With humor and good ribbing, they help me not take myself too seriously.”

He started teaching in deacon formation at USML in 2019 and his excitement for his new role as Archdiocesan Director of Deacon Formation is palpable. He is eager to grow closer to Jesus Christ, build relationships, help men discern a call to ordained ministry, and increase awareness of the deacon’s character and ministry.

Moore is inspired to continue and build upon the great work of his predecessor, Deacon Bob Puhala, and everyone who serves in the Spanish and English deacon formation. This inspiration ensures the continuity and growth of the deacon formation program.

“The Holy Spirit has been at work on me in a special way for a couple of years,” said Moore. “I was overjoyed to be asked to teach deacon candidates how to assist at mass and celebrate baptisms, marriage ceremonies, and funeral rites.”

USML educates and forms lay leaders and priests to serve the Church and its people. It has over 1,000 lay students and 100 seminarians from 30 dioceses. USML’s faculty are recognized as leaders in their fields, sought-after speakers, and serve as members in pontifical academies, councils, and the International Theological Commission.
