Dr. Harold Horell Delivers Paluch Lecture on Synodality

MUNDELEIN, IL – The University of Saint Mary of the Lake (USML) hosted the annual Paluch Lecture on October 24th, featuring Dr. Harold Horell, the Margaret and Chester Paluch Chair of Theology. Horell’s presentation, “Synodality and its Discontents,” delved into the concept of synodality, tracing its historical roots from the early Church to the Second Vatican Council and beyond.

The lecture explored the Church’s reliance on synodal gatherings to discern the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Horell examined synodality’s positive aspects and its criticisms. He discussed how, despite its challenges, synodality can be a vital tool for Church leadership in the modern world. Dr. Horell’s expertise and engaging presentation gave attendees valuable insights into synodality’s complexities and its relevance to the contemporary Church.

Dr. Horell has fostered dialogue and collaboration within academic and Church communities throughout his professional career. Before joining the USML community, he served for twenty-one years on the Fordham University Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education faculty. His primary vocations are as a husband, father, and grandfather.
