Dr. L.D. Moorehead
The museum located within Feehan Library features a distinguished collection dedicated to Dr. L.D. Moorehead, the personal physician to Cardinal George Mundelein. Deeply respected and trusted, Dr. Moorehead earned admiration not only from Cardinal Mundelein but also from the Vatican.
In recognition of his service, Dr. Moorehead was named a Knight of St. Gregory in 1931 by Pope Pius XI. In March 1950, he received the Order of Knight Commander with Grand Star and Cross—the highest honor bestowed within the Papal Order of St. Gregory. This distinction was conferred by Cardinal Samuel Stritch, acting on behalf of Pope Pius XII, in a private ceremony at Dr. Moorehead’s home.
Additionally, in 1938, Dr. Moorehead was appointed Second Chamberlain of the Cape and Sword to the Pope, a title confirmed by Pope Pius XII in 1939. The ceremonial uniform associated with this honor is displayed in the collection.
Among the many honors Dr. Moorehead received is the Order of Malta, also seen here. His influence on both Cardinal Mundelein and Cardinal Stritch was profound, and his enduring devotion to the Church left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
