The Coat of Arms

The shield tells the story of Cardinal Mundelein’s life and ministry. The lower left quadrant features the three bees of the Barberini family, whose generosity helped finance his education. During his studies, Cardinal Mundelein also resided for a time in the Barberini Palace. The remaining sections of the shield display three Marian symbols honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, reflecting the Cardinal’s lifelong devotion to Our Lady.

Cardinal George Mundelein had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and a profound gratitude for those who supported his education. These values are beautifully reflected in a handcrafted coat of arms, generously gifted to the University by Father Miguel Martinez of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

This remarkable work of craftsmanship is both a meaningful historical artifact and a testament to the faith, artistry, and generosity of those who create and preserve sacred objects. We are deeply grateful to Father Martinez for this beautiful addition to the University’s collections.
