Synodality and its Discontents
Dr. Harold D. Horell, Chair of the Margaret and Chester Paluch Chair of Theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, delivered his first Paluch Lecture on October 24. His lecture reviewed how the Church has relied on synodal gatherings to discern the guidance of the Spirit from the Council of Jerusalem, as discussed in Acts of the Apostles, chapter 15, through the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) to the present.

PERMANENT DIACONATE ACOLYTE MASS
A group of men in formation to become Permanent Deacons were instituted as Acolytes during a November 10th Mass in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception on the campus of USML. The Acolyte has a special role in the Church as it is now their responsibility to assist priests and Deacons in carrying out their ministry; this is most commonly done through assisting the priest during Mass. DEACON FORMATION
The mission of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization’s Deacon Formation Program is to prepare men to be deacons — icons of Christ the Servant, emissaries of the bishop, and servant-leaders—through a distinctive formation process for ordained ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago. It does so by offering a comprehensive program that specifically addresses the mission and identity of diaconal ministry through the four pillars of formation: the Human, Intellectual, Spiritual, and Pastoral while educating men for the three-fold ministry of service to the Word, Liturgy, and Charity.
Formation is a four-year program. It includes the one-year Aspirant Stage, which concentrates on prayer and discernment, and the three-year Candidate Stage, which also contains most of the academic courses and all other formation elements that may lead to Holy Orders. Learn more about our Deacon Formation Program by clicking here.
