Mundelein Seminary Celebrates Appointment of Bishop Ronald A. Hicks as Archbishop of New York
Mundelein Seminary joyfully congratulates Bishop Ronald A. Hicks on his appointment by Pope Leo XIV as the next Archbishop of New York, succeeding Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
A deeply rooted member of the Mundelein Seminary community, Archbishop-elect Hicks is an alumnus, holding both a Master of Divinity (1994) and a Doctor of Ministry (2003). He further served the formation of future priests in a leadership role as Dean of Formation at Mundelein Seminary, beginning in 2010, and was appointed by Cardinal George. He has also served on Mundelein Seminary’s Board of Advisors since 2014.
“Archbishop-elect Hicks embodies the spirit of our mission,” said Fr. John Kartje, Rector of Mundelein Seminary. “During his time as Dean of Formation, he brought to Mundelein a deeply pastoral heart and love for the poor and marginalized, a keen theological intellect, and outstanding leadership skills. I cannot think of anyone better suited to serve as shepherd for the Catholic faithful of New York and as a valued partner to New York’s civic leadership.”
Prior to his appointment as Bishop of Joliet in 2020, Archbishop-Elect Hicks also served as Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago (2018–2020) and as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Chicago (2015–2018). These roles reflect his ongoing commitment to service, administrative strength, and pastoral vision developed during his years at Mundelein Seminary.
