Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
USML Annual Notice
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students who are 18 years of age or older (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights are:
- The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days after the day the USML receives an access request.
- The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA: https://studentprivacy.ed.gov/ferpa
- The right to provide written consent before the school discloses personally identifiable information (PII) from the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent of USML classified directory information.
- USML defines directory information as:
- Name
- Campus address
- Current enrollment
- Dates of attendance
- Currently enrolled students may request that directory information be withheld from disclosure by making a request, in writing, to Sr. Caroline Onuoha, DMMM, Director of Registration and Records. USML assumes that failure on the part of the student to specifically request the withholding of any directory information indicates approval of disclosure.
- USML defines directory information as:
- The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the [School] to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA are:
- Student Privacy Policy Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20202
