34th Annual Rector’s Classic
On September 18, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake’s (USML) Mundelein Seminary hosted its 34th annual Rector’s Classic. This premier golf event brought together community leaders and philanthropists to support the education and formation of future Catholic priests. The event not only raised funds but also celebrated a distinguished alumnus, Father Thomas Franzman, who was honored as the 2025 Cardinal Joseph Bernardin In Service of One Another Honoree.

The day kicked off at Pine Meadow Golf Club, where golfers enjoyed a beautiful morning on the course. Participants supported the greater mission with every swing as they took part in the shotgun-start tournament, following a morning of registration, driving range sessions, and lunch.
The Rector’s Classic is renowned for providing an opportunity for camaraderie in the community while serving as a vital fundraiser. The contributions from sponsors—who were recognized with prominent signage and in event materials—are an investment in a legacy of faith and service, ensuring that seminarians are empowered to become compassionate leaders for their communities.

The evening continued at USML’s dining hall, where the spirit of giving was celebrated with cocktails, a silent auction, and a raffle. The program provided a moment to celebrate the collective impact of the community and to acknowledge Fr. Franzman’s lifetime of service.
His extensive ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago spans more than five decades. A distinguished alumnus of multiple archdiocesan institutions, he has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as rector of Quigley North Seminary from 1982 to 1990 and as provost at USML. He was also a recipient of Mundelein Seminary’s “As Those Who Serve Award” in 2008. Today, he continues to serve the community every weekend at St. Pat’s in Lake Forest, where this year marks his 16th year.

The event culminated in an awards ceremony and dinner, celebrating the tournament’s top performers and the collective effort to support the seminary. The annual Rector’s Classic is a testament to the community’s dedication to the future of the Church. The critical funds raised will directly impact the academic, spiritual, and pastoral development of the seminary’s students.
