Special Auction Item
We are proud to announce a special auction item in honor of this year’s Rector’s Classic! In the Holy Year of 2025, up to six people will spend one week in Rome with USML’s Rector Emeritus, Msgr. John Canary and Provost, Dr. Brian Schmisek visiting sites pertaining to the New Testament and the two saints inextricably linked to the Eternal City.
Bidding is now open online and will continue in-person during the Awards Dinner after golf on September 12, the winning bid will be announced after 8:30 p.m.

In Service of One Another Award

RITE OF CANDIDACY MASS
On Thursday, August 28, Cardinal Blase Cupich, Chancellor of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, was on campus for the Mass of the Holy Spirit and Rite of Candidacy. Candidacy is a public declaration of one’s intention to pursue Diaconate and Priesthood and implies a personal willingness to spiritually prepare for the calling to ordained ministry. It also symbolizes a commitment to one’s own Archdiocese or Diocese and a determination to serve the people with joy and enthusiasm.

ANNOUNCEMENT: THE SCHOOL OF PARISH LEADERSHIP AND EVANGELIZATION
Fr. Kartje, Rector/President, announced that Dr. Paul Hilliard will begin serving as Interim Dean of the School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization. Dr. Hilliard, a church historian, has been on the faculty at USML for more than a decade. In that time, he has taught in each of the English language programs offered in the school, and he served as the director of the D.Min. program. Dr. Hilliard will provide leadership to the School which sees enrollment at more than 400 students this fall including at parishes and other locations throughout the region.
In a significant achievement last year, Dr. Theodore (Ted) Whapham secured a $1.25M Lilly grant to foster Thriving Congregations. Ted will now serve as Director of the Thriving Congregations Grant and External Relations, ensuring the success of the grant and representing the school to constituencies including the Archdiocese of Chicago and external partners.
In other leadership roles, Jesus (Chuy) Garcia started as Senior Coordinator for Parish Ministry Programs and Deacon Dan Moore started as the new Senior Coordinator for Deacon Formation programs as Deacon Bob Puhala recently retired after serving in the role for nearly 20 years. Chuy and Dan bring significant experience to their respective roles.

A PILLAR OF DEACON FORMATION RETIRES
Deacon Bob Puhala, the Director of the Deacon Formation Programs for the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Coordinator of Deacon Formation Programs at USML’s School of Parish Leadership & Evangelization, retires after more than 20 years of faithful service at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake (USML).

NEW DIRECTOR OF DEACON FORMATION
Deacon Daniel Moore is named the new Archdiocesan Director of Deacon Formation at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake (USML). As the Director of Deacon Formation, he’ll oversee the deacon program in English and Spanish for the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Moore is inspired to continue and build upon the great work of his predecessor, Deacon Bob Puhala, and everyone who serves in the Spanish and English deacon formation. This inspiration ensures the continuity and growth of the deacon formation program.

COMMUNITY DAY AT USML
On Saturday, August 24 our seminarians participated in our annual Community Day at USML to kick off the fall semester.
Our seminarians worked to repair the shoreline erosion of St. Mary’s Lake to protect the flora/fauna ecosystem of our campus, helping to restore the 100 year old iron fence line of Cardinal Mundelein’s home, and improve the ballfields for extracurricular seminarian camaraderie.

UPCOMING EVENT: SEMINARY SALUTES, RERUM NOVARUM

Started in 1991, the Seminary Salutes, Rerum Novarum dinner and awards ceremony honors lay men and women who are examples of Catholic Social Teaching in action, especially in the areas of labor, business and government.
The fundamentals of this award are: respect for the dignity of the human being and human labor, the right to organize, and the right to a living wage. The evening provides the seminary with an opportunity to identify Catholic men and women in their fields, who by their example and work have promoted the social teachings of the Church. Those honored receive the prestigious Rerum Novarum Award from the Archbishop of Chicago.

Father John Kartje, serving as both Rector and President of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, demonstrates his commitment to spiritual guidance through his weekly recorded sermons and reflections. GEORGE CARDINAL MUNDELEIN SCHOLARSHIP
The School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake offers affordable programs for lay people and others who want to learn about their faith and serve the church. We know that affordability is an important factor in choosing a program. So, our programs are priced competitively while at the same time providing a world class theological education.
The University is part of the Archdiocese of Chicago which offers the George Cardinal Mundelein Scholarship to support students from diocese who send their seminarians to the University of Saint Mary of the Lake’s Mundelein Seminary. The scholarship provides $11,000 of tuition assistance to students.
