Vocation Story

After “discerning out” of Computer Science in graduate school, I began a decade long search for my “vocation.” The search took me to Taiwan to become a kindergarten teacher, to Alabama to work at a start up doing research and development, and ultimately to China to learn Chinese. I knew that I wanted to find some kind of meaningful work and to serve others, but I didn’t know what form it would take. After studying Chinese for a year and a half, I found a job at an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) doing poverty alleviation through microfinance. I moved to southern China to help farmers lift themselves out of poverty through the use of microloans. In one sense, I had achieved many of the goals I had made for myself, living overseas, working in a Chinese language environment, and serving the poor, but yet I still felt like something was missing. I had a great group of faithful friends and a great local parish, and in this context I was able to begin discern God’s call more clearly. I felt like He was calling me to the priesthood, and after a lot of prayer and reading, I felt that call confirmed. I entered Mundelein in 2014 for the Archdiocese of Chicago and have loved my time here!
