Saint Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church in Crystal Lake

I enjoy woodworking and building or fixing random things. I also like to collect antiques from different time periods dealing with the USA.
I have been inside a World War II submarine torpedo tube
When I was a child growing up at St. Thomas Church in Crystal Lake, I had heard Fr. Hermes give many talks on how the church needed more altar servers. I liked the idea of helping out at mass and doing something other than sitting and waiting so I joined and became an alter server when I was in 5th grade. Through some contact with Fr. Hermes and going to confession to him as well, I grew in faith seeing his example. I started going to some retreats and events from St. Thomas growing up that continued to flourish my zeal for my growing faith.
While at the Newman Center at Northern Illinois University I had started my questioning of Fr. McMorrow about church teachings and problems I had with being Catholic. I heard my calling to the priesthood and I was trying to convince myself that the Catholic Church was not the true church. I tried to think of it in every possible aspect that I was wrong or that God was wrong. But after simple and clear answers from Fr. McMorrow I started to realize I was just running away from the truth. Slowly I started talking to more priests and people about vocations and then I started talking to Fr. Hermes again. After some help from him as well in this area I was able to get more answers and a deeper appreciation of priestly life. From these priests I started meeting with my vocation director and have been pursuing my calling to the priesthood ever since.
