Politics has always been on my mind. In high school, I was voted “most likely to become president,” and for many years throughout college, I always held that as a possibility. But in college a problem arose. I sought happiness in going out and in all the things college-age students get caught up in. My report card for first semester came in and I saw that the straight A student that I had been in high school had turned into a pseudo frat boy. I chose to buckle down and even look for a scholarship to pay for next year’s tuition. Ten pages and several forms later, I had answered a very broad question for the scholarship that would end up paying for two years of my education. That question was “How will the European Union scholarship help you attain your ultimate academic goal?” For selfish reasons, I wrote “I want to study Political Science and Italian at the U of I so that I can become a Roman Catholic priest one day and work abroad, at the Vatican, for the newspaper l’Osservatore Romano.” Though this was a selfish start to my vocational journey, I think that God began working through this essay. Eucharistic adoration and much prayer followed. After a year in Springfield, working for state representatives, I packed up and entered seminary.
