Upon arrival, at our hotel, we walked to Holy Spirit Cathedral where we had tickets to greet him in the courtyard on his way into the Cathedral for the Liturgy of the Word Service. We came within a foot of each other, and I was lost for words. I had seen Pope Francis before in person, but this was different. This was an American Pope, from Chicago, where I\u00a0go to seminary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0078-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0078-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0078-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0078-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0078-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0078-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Facade of St Anthony Church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the day, we went to St. Anthony Church to celebrate Mass. It was amazing to see this beautiful church that gets 5,000 visitors a day in the heart of Istanbul. Another reminder to me that the church is still very much alive in the country. After Mass, we met a Franciscan Priest there who was born in Iowa but grew up in T\u00fcrkiye. We learned about this mission of the Church in T\u00fcrkiye as well as his relations with the Orthodox Churches and the Muslims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0077-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0077-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0077-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0077-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0077-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/usml.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0077-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Me and the Bosphorus, separating Europe and Asia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To end the day, we went to the Sultan&#8217;s Palace. Although it&nbsp;was filled&nbsp;with artifacts from the ancient world, I&nbsp;was more blown&nbsp;away by the grounds and the size of the Palace. While it was fun to explore, it was also the first time all trip where we had a chance to slow down, even just for an hour. A friend and I went to the back of the palace and sat down watching the ships go by on the Bosphorus Strait.
