May Crowning
On Sunday, May 3 Fr. Kartje presided over our Mass and May Crowning in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. The Chapel provided a beautiful, intimate setting for today’s May Crowning. We loved seeing so many of you for Mass and brunch—it was a joy to celebrate this tradition with our community. The perfect way to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, even though the rain kept us indoors!

Msgr. Patrick Brennan Display
Currently on display in Mundelein Hall is an exhibit of USML graduate Monsignor Patrick Brennan, who is among 81 20th-century Korean martyrs currently awaiting beatification—a powerful witness of faith and sacrifice.
Ordained in 1928 and a graduate of Quigley Preparatory Seminary, Father Brennan answered the call to mission, serving across China and Korea with the Columban Fathers. In 1947, he was appointed superior of their missionaries throughout East Asia, and later named Prefect Apostolic of Gwangju, Korea.
His life of service was crowned in martyrdom on September 24, 1950, when he was killed by North Korean forces while imprisoned in Taejon. In 2014, he was declared a Servant of God.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the witness of all martyrs, who gave their lives in faithful devotion—proclaiming the Gospel and living out your love to the end.

Pontifical Faculty of Theology

From the archives, the Sacred Congregation of Seminaries and Universities, now known as the Congregation for Catholic Education, established a Pontifical Faculty of Theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in 1929.
The Faculty was initially authorized to grant Pontifical degrees for five years, and in 1934, this authorization was made permanent, marking the first seminary in the US to receive this decree under the Apostolic Constitution “Deus Scientiarum Dominus.”

The Bridge Magazine, Spring 2026
“I really felt that the Holy Spirit was present in the Mass. Something about the reckless abandon with which everyone seemed to give themselves to the Mass left me feeling like I had never really celebrated the Mass fully.”
In our Spring 2026 The Bridge Magazine cover story, Chicago seminarian Matthew Duff III shares his experience serving at St. Moses the Black Parish.

Weekly Birdhouse Monitoring

When you visit the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, a beautiful mix of nature and human construction greets you. The wrought-iron and brick gate opens to a pathway lined with young trees, and if you look to your right, you might spot a small but important addition that is helping native species continue to take flight.
Over a dozen uniquely crafted birdhouses have dotted the landscape since 2012 – the careful creation of Roger Kratz, a Mundelein native who used to sneak on to campus as a kid, but now dedicates his time and talent to helping bluebirds, chickadees, and tree swallows thrive on that same land.
