The 30th annual Rector’s Classic at Pine Meadow Golf Course was held on September 23, 2021. The highlight of the evening was the awards dinner honoring Most Reverend John R. Gorman with the 2021 In Service of One Another Catholic Humanitarian Award.
Over a hundred golfers were met by seminarians who welcomed attendees to begin their day at check-in. From there, practice was the order of the day! Before heading to their carts, donors enjoyed a hot lunch under a tent. Father John Kartje, rector of Mundelein Seminary, began the competition with an address. Soon, everyone was on their way to their first hole. Much enjoyment and friendly competition ensued.
Dan Schlesser (left) met seminarian Joseph Solomon (second from left) at the course and quickly discovered they belong to the same parish, Saint Petronille Church Glen Ellyn, IL. Dan attended the golf outing with his brother Tim (right) and his father-in-law Tony Colucci (second from right.) It was their third time attending the Rector’s Classic and Dan said, “Even though it’s a little nippy, it doesn’t matter. It’s all about enjoying life, being with family and friends, and meeting new people like Joseph. It’s another way of supporting seminarians.”
The awards dinner was a fitting occasion to honor the Most Reverend John R. Gorman ‘52 with the 2021 In Service of One Another Catholic Humanitarian Award. This award was inspired by Cardinal Bernardin and recognizes a significant contribution supporting the dignity of the human person as embodied in Catholic teaching. Bishop Gorman was the fourth rector of Mundelein Seminary serving from 1966-1973. He was formerly the pastor of Saint Michael Parish in Orland Park, IL, and later the director of the Department of Parish/Pastoral Services. As a bishop, he served as vicar for regional services/vicar general and vicar for Vicariate I and Vicariate 5 in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Our current rector Father John Kartje said, “His spirit of servant leadership is what we try to instill in our seminarians.”

Awards for the golf outing, raffle, and auction were also distributed. Donors enjoyed live music and dinner served by our very own seminarians.
